Privacy Policy

Twendetribe — Plan trips together — Effective 3 August 2026

1. Who We Are

Twendetribe (“we”, “our”, or “us”) operates the Twendetribe mobile application and website (twendetribe.africa) — a platform that helps groups of people organise trips, split costs transparently, and capture shared memories.

This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. By creating an account or using Twendetribe, you agree to the practices described here.

Plain-language summary: We collect only what we need to run the platform, never sell your data to advertisers, and never hold your money — payments flow directly between you and other trip members.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information you provide

2.2 Information collected automatically

2.3 Location data

When you add a meeting point or destination to a trip, you may optionally share geographic co-ordinates or a place identifier. We do not track your real-time location in the background.

2.4 Information from third parties

If you sign in with Google, we receive your Google account name and email address. We do not receive your Google password or payment methods.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

We do not use your data to serve third-party advertising, build advertising profiles, or sell your information to any third party.

4. Sharing Your Information

4.1 With other trip members

Your name, profile photo, and phone number are visible to other confirmed members of trips you join. Trip content you create (photos, journal entries, chat messages, itinerary items) is visible to all confirmed members of that trip. Cost data (how much each person owes and has contributed) is visible to the trip organiser and co-organisers, and, in aggregate, to all members.

4.2 With circles

If a trip is linked to a Twendetribe “circle” (a recurring group of travellers), the circle owner and admins can see that the trip exists and its basic details. Trip-level financial data and member phone numbers are not shared with the wider circle.

4.3 Public discovery

If you mark a trip as Open and publish it to discovery, a limited preview (title, destination, dates, cover image, organiser first name, activity tags, price estimate, and available spots) becomes visible to any signed-in Twendetribe user browsing the discover feed. Your phone number and the member roster are never included in public previews.

4.4 Service providers

We share data with trusted processors who help us operate the platform:

These providers are contractually prohibited from using your data for any purpose beyond providing their services to us.

4.5 Legal requirements

We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or a valid government request, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Twendetribe, its users, or the public.

4.6 Business transfers

In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your data becomes subject to a materially different privacy policy.

5. Payments & Financial Data

Non-custodial model: Twendetribe does not hold, process, or transfer money. Trip contributions are made directly from a member to the organiser. We record contribution amounts and payment references that members enter or that arrive via a payment callback, so that cost splits can be calculated and displayed. We never see your payment PIN.

Where a contribution is made via M-Pesa, that transaction is governed by Safaricom’s own terms and privacy policy. We encourage you to review those separately.

Contribution and disbursement records are retained for the life of the trip and a reasonable period thereafter to allow for dispute resolution, in accordance with applicable financial record-keeping requirements.

6. Photos, Memories & Media

Photos you upload (trip cover images, shared album photos, disbursement receipts) are stored on our servers or, if configured, in Amazon S3. They are accessible to confirmed members of the relevant trip.

We do not use your photos to train machine-learning or AI models. We do not perform facial recognition on uploaded images.

You retain ownership of photos you upload. By uploading, you grant Twendetribe a limited, non-exclusive licence to store, display, and transmit the photo within the platform solely for the purpose of operating the service. When you delete a photo or your account, we delete the file from our servers (subject to the backup retention period below).

7. Push Notifications

We use Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to send push notifications to your device. These include: trip update alerts, new member notifications, payment reminders, and system messages from the platform.

You can disable push notifications at any time in your device settings or within the Twendetribe app under Notification Preferences. Disabling push notifications does not affect transactional emails (such as OTP codes and password resets).

Your FCM device token is stored on our servers and used solely to route notifications to your device. It is deleted when you sign out or delete your account.

8. Location Data

Twendetribe does not request continuous or background access to your device’s location.

Location information is only used when you voluntarily type or search for a meeting point, destination, or departure point for a trip. Any co-ordinates derived from a place search are stored as part of the trip record and are visible to confirmed members of that trip.

9. Data Retention

10. Security

We implement the following measures to protect your information:

No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us immediately at support@twendetribe.africa.

13. Third-Party Services

The app integrates with the following third-party services. Their use of your data is governed by their own privacy policies:

Continued use of Twendetribe after a policy update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.
